On my last trip to Ikea, I spotted a set of inexpensive drawstring bags. At the time, I had just returned from traveling and had been thinking about how I'd like to have a better way to organize my suitcase. I took the bags home and decided to make them a little cuter. I printed a simple prickly pear cacti garden along the bottom! The next time I travel, I'll use 'em for shoes or socks or dirty clothes. They are light weight, so they are great for helping with organizing without adding more bulk or weight to my bag. Plus, now they are covered with cacti.... one of my favorite things. You can do the same! Read on to learn how.
What you need: draw string bags (get them at ikea like I did or find something similar on amazon), craft paints suitable for fabric, speedy cut printing block, brayer, linoleum cutter, cardboard or scrap paper, pencil, scissors, and string (if you'd like to change the string that came with the bag like I did), iron and ironing board.
1. Carve out your stamps. You'll need a flower pot and 2 sizes of the paddle shape.
2. After you've tested your block print on scrap paper, start printing your bags. You can use the 2 sizes of paddles to make different shaped cactus to create a 'garden'. Be sure you've ironed the bag to get rid of any wrinkles and that you place a piece of cardboard inside to keep the paint from going through. After the paint is dry, use an iron to set.
3. Swap out the string if you'd like. The easiest way to do this is to tie the new string to the old and simply pull through.
